Home Expert Advice Hammocks Knowledge Center Hammock Safety

  • Be sure that you hang your hammock within the recommended hanging distance. Hanging a hammock in a space too small can result in sagging and touching the ground when laying in the hammock. Likewise, hanging a hammock stretched too far could result in tipping.
  • Be sure to hang your hammock in a secure location. All stands have stated maximum weight capacities, but if you hang your hammock on something other than a stand, be sure the structure is strong enough to support the weight of the hammock and the occupant. A hammock should never be hung from an object that has the potential to move.
  • Observe recommended weight limits for both stands and hammocks. If you overload your hammock or stand, injuries can occur.
  • Keep the area around a hammock clear, so that if hammock support does give out, nothing is around to cause major harm.
  • To enter your hammock, sit as close to the center as possible, holding onto the hammock with both hands until you gain your balance. Slowly twist and lean back into the hammock, slowly bringing your legs and feet into the hammock.
  • Try to sit as close to the center of your hammock as possible while reclining. This will help keep the weight in the hammock evenly distributed, preventing tipping.
  • To exit your hammock, hold the hammock with both hands, sit up slowly, and swing your legs to the side of the hammock. Plant your feet firmly on the ground and then stand up out of the hammock.
  • Do not swing wildly back and forth in your hammock. Swift movement can cause a hammock to tip, resulting in injury.
  • Kids should never use a hammock unsupervised. Children can easily become entangled in strings, resulting in potential injury.
