Celebrate National S’more Day with the Ultimate S’more

National S'more Day Header, with chair, glass of wine, and marshmallows over the fire.

National S’more day is upon us (it’s August 10th in case you were wondering), and there’s no better way to enjoy the last days of Summer than with a warm, gooey s’more. So, here are a few recipes to help you create the Ultimate S’more before the warm weather ends and school starts back up.

The Classic

Marshmallows being cooked over a campfire

Before you leave a comment or click away because you don’t think a classic s’more is “ultimate” enough, hear me out. While this may be a classic s’more, it’s not exactly your standard s’more either. I’m obviously going to punch it up a bit to make sure it qualifies as “ultimate”.

Ingredients:

  • Homemade Graham Crackers
  • Homemade Marshmallows
  • Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate

So, first off, we’re not going store bought here; made from scratch Graham Crackers and Marshmallows mean you know exactly what you’re eating, and are great for anybody with allergies. For the chocolate I went with Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate for a couple of reasons – first, Ghirardelli, in my opinion, makes the best chocolate around, and second, because they make it in squares that are perfectly shaped for putting on a s’more.

Sweet n Salty

Alright, now we’re going to mix it up a bit, bringing in some ingredients that you probably don’t think of when you go and buy your s’more supplies, but that you really should.

Ingredients:

  • Homemade Graham Crackers
  • Homemade Marshmallows
  • Sea Salt
  • Ghirardelli Caramel Filled Chocolate
  • Bacon (optional)

We’re going to use the same made-from-scratch marshmallows and graham crackers here, because why would we not? Instead of your standard chocolate we’re mixing it up with caramel filled chocolate from Ghirardelli. We’ll hit that with just a touch of sea salt to make instant salted chocolate and caramel. Ghirardelli sells one that uses salted caramel, but I like doing it this way to control the level of saltiness.

If you really want to take this s’more over the top, throw a couple slice of nice crispy bacon between the marshmallow and the chocolate to really push the sweet and salty balance into salty’s favor. I made this one (sans the bacon), and I have to tell you that it was amazing – you’re really missing out if you don’t try this.

The Twist

This one isn’t too much of a departure, but it’s definitely one that I think you’ll want to try.

Ingredients:

  • Homemade Graham Crackers
  • Homemade Marshmallows
  • Nutella

Not only does the Nutella provide a different flavor than you’re used to thanks to the hazelnut, but since it’s spreadable and doesn’t have to be refrigerated, this is a great option for a unique s’more when you go camping. Take a jar of this along and the kids will want to have the campfire going whenever they’re in the mood for a sweet treat.

The Grown Up

You didn’t think these were only going to be for the kids, did you? Don’t worry mom and dad, here’s one for you to enjoy while the kids are burning their marshmallows in the fire pit.

Ingredients:

  • Homemade Graham Crackers
  • Homemade Marshmallows
  • Ghirardelli White Chocolate
  • Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate
  • Irish Cream Sauce

Use both white and milk chocolate here (or a swirl if you can find one) and drizzle the whole thing with the Irish Cream sauce to give it that little something extra that’s definitely not for the kids.
