Earth Day started in 1970, and Americans were driving around in their gas guzzling SUVs. Industries produced sludge and smoke without fear of consequence from environmental agencies. On April 22, 1970, million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Earth Day quickly became a holiday that is celebrated worldwide.
